Writing Your Best Man Speech
The best man is expected to give a funny, positive and light hearted speech that will keep the guests amused and entertained. Therefore, it can feel like a lot pressure to try and fulfill these expectations when preparing your speech. Below is an outline of how you could structure your speech with some ideas and of what you could include.
Introduction / Thank the Groom
Introduce yourself and thank the groom for choosing you as his best man. It is also your duty to thank the groom for his toast on behalf of the bridesmaids.
Share a Story / Anecdote About the Groom
This is where you can entertain your audience with a funny story about the groom. Perhaps some misbehaviors from his past, you don't want to embarrass the groom just have a laugh at his expense. So avoid mentioning anything that might upset the bride or cause any unnecessary embarrassment. Remember to choose a story that all the audience can enjoy and relate to. If your story involves people that the guests don't know it may seem funny to you, but lose it's humor to anyone else.
You could also include funny comments about the groom's personal qualities/traits. Such as, is he tight with money, obsessed with a certain sport, known to drink a few too many or have any unusual interests.
Talk About the Happy Couple
Comment on the newlyweds. This could be about their appearance and compatibility or a story about them as couple. Mention if either of them changed since they've been together?
Read Messages
It is the best man's job to read any telegrams or messages from people who were unable to attend the wedding. These could be real or fictitious.
Sincere Tribute to Groom
After you have poked fun at the groom, it's best to have something nice to say before ending your speech. Comment on his good qualities and how you've appreciated his friendship. You could compliment him, as the bride always gets most of the attention, tell him he has lovely eyes or nice hair!
Toast the Happy Couple
Finish your speech wishing the bride and groom all the best for the future with a toast. Add in some humor if you want. Here are some examples:
'It gives me tremendous pleasure to propose a toast to the bride and groom. My best friend has found the girl of his dreams and I really couldn't be happier for them! Please join me is wishing them a wonderful future together.'
'Marriage brings new responsibilities. (Bride) - from now on, you should never disagree or argue with (groom), because he's the head of the family now. You are expected to keep your makeup and hair perfect all the time and to dress in a way that pleases (groom). You should encourage him to go out with his friends regularly and cook his favorite meals each night. If you do these things then your marriage will be blessed with happiness. (Bride) - I know that (groom) loves you a lot - because he spent many hours with me writing this speech. Congratulations to you both!'
'Ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses to the bride and groom and join me in wishing them many, many years of happiness.'
