Appear Confident for Your Wedding Speech

You are not alone in feeling extremely nervous about delivering a wedding speech. Wedding speeches are great when you don't have to give one! It's important to remember that everyone is on your side and wants your speech to go well. If you appear nervous and uncomfortable then you make your audience feel uncomfortable. So it's important that you appear confident (even if you don't feel that way) to make your speech a success. Here are some tips:

Practice, Practice, Practice & Practice Some More!

This can seem like a boring piece of advice, but it's what can make the biggest difference to your level of confidence on the day. If you know your speech inside and out, then you are going to feel far more confident about it, than if you have a few ideas or stories that you are going to piece together on the day. Plus, rehearsing your speech to different people will give you some feedback on just how good your speech is. If you get positive feedback, you will have more confidence, knowing you have great material and that your speech could be a big hit. If your get poor feedback, then at least you'll find this out before the wedding and can make changes.

Joke About Your Nerves!

A great icebreaker is a gag about your nerves. This will get your audience laughing first thing and help you feel more relaxed. Often once you get into a speech and the guests laugh or respond how you want them to, your confidence increases and it can almost become enjoyable (well at least bearable!). And when you are enjoying yourself, then your audience will definitely be enjoying it. So, really work on having a great opening line or joke to give your speech a great kick start. Because if you start of weak then it's hard to pick up momentum and you'll lose confidence. Even if you have some great material, you can easily ruin it, if it's rushed or not delivered well.

Smile & Make Eye Contact

Smiling makes you look at ease and comfortable when you are speaking. You don't want to be grinning or look like you're posing for a photo. Just keep a subtle smile to show you are having a good time. Along with smiling, have good eye contact with the audience. This makes you look more confident, rather than looking down at your notes or focusing on one spot.

Joke About Mistakes

If you do miss a line, screw up a joke or just have a mind block, the best thing to do is, move forward and tell your audience that you mucked up and laugh it off. If you try to repeat or fix it, usually it won't work and just makes it more painful for you and the audience. You could even pre-plan a joke if you think that kind of scenario is likely to happen.
