Mother of the Bride Speech
It is becoming more common for the bride's mother to make a speech, as traditionally it was only the father of the bride that spoke at the wedding. Nowadays, the mother may speak instead of the father or have a combined speech with him or just say a few words. There is no formal structure for this type of speech, but here are some ideas of what you might want to include:
Talk about your daughter
Share stories or comments about your daughter from when she was growing up. Talk about her personal qualities and what she was like before meeting the groom. Say how your daughter told you about the groom for the first time (this can be a great hit in the wedding speech).
Talk about your new son-in-law
You can say what you thought of groom when you met him for the first time. Was he what you expected? Did you think they were a perfect match? Talk about his personal qualities and how happy you are to have him as part of your family.
Talk about them as a couple
Tell the story of how they met and mention if either of them changed through their relationship. What was your reaction when you first heard about their engagement? Say some sincere words of how they are a great match.
Talk about the wedding preparations & the wedding day
Most weddings have plenty of drama leading up to the big day, with so many things to organize. And the day itself may have more stories such as dresses not fitting or flowers not arriving on time. These types of stories can be funny for the guests to hear. And as the mother of the bride you have probably been in the thick of it all, trying to make everything run smoothly and keep your daughter calm!
Apart from the funny stories of things going wrong, you should also talk sincerely about the wedding ceremony itself and how moving it was to see your daughter get married.
Offer advice about marriage
You can provide some words of wisdom on marriage, it may be from your own experience or it could be a quote or saying that you think is appropriate.
Toast the newlyweds
Finish your speech off with a toast to the happy couple. Try to make it original and heartfelt to wish them all the best for the future. If you have people you want to thank, then you could include that before your toast.
