Writing a Maid of Honor Speech
It is easy to procrastinate when it comes to writing a maid of honor speech. There's always something else to do and plenty of reasons why it can wait until tomorrow. And then before you know it, the wedding is in two days time and you have absolutely nothing! You want to avoid being in this situation as it's very stressful, especially when the bride keeps you busy with other jobs before the wedding.
First of all, give yourself at least two weeks to write your speech. You need this time to think of stories, ideas, jokes, advice or quotes etc. Deciding what to include and how to include it takes time. You may want to talk to friends or the bride's family for ideas or to help think of appropriate stories.
Collecting all the material for your speech could take about a week and then you need another week to put it all together as a fabulous speech and then find some time to practice it on friends for their feedback. So you can see how two weeks, is not much time.
Getting honest feedback from your friends or family is very important. You need to know that your jokes are funny and your words about friendship are sincere and moving. Ask for some constructive criticism, it is much better to hear this from your friends than be the only one laughing at your jokes on the wedding day.
If you feel overwhelmed with how to even start, here are some ideas to get you writing:
- Provide an introduction of yourself - how do you know the bride? How did you feel when you were asked to be maid of honor?
- Share some stories about you and the bride - these may be from your childhood or teenage years or perhaps more recent stories. It's always good to choose a funny story about the bride.
- Say some words about your friendship with the bride - you could use a quote or a poem if you find it hard writing something yourself
- Talk about the bride and groom as a couple - you may want to say some words about the groom (if you know him well). Has either of them changed since being together? How did they meet? Was it a romantic proposal? Does the bride have any annoying habits that the groom will have to put up with?
- Give a toast to the newlyweds - wish them a life full of happiness, good health and success.
